The Harley Street Medical Centre lamp is a bespoke piece celebrating water and the human spirit. It hangs directly over river stones that represent the ancient bed of the Maitai River floodplain upon which the building stands. The three sides of the lamp represent the three branches of the Maitai River – Mahitahi Raki (North Branch), Mahitahi Tonga (South Branch) and Mahitahi (main flow). The Maitai River is the city of Nelson’s life support: long may it flow clean and fresh to sustain life.
The people on the lamp are our community. They are derived from Maori rock drawings thought to be created by the first people in Aotearoa – Waitahi people. They represent the flow of the human spirit through the generations as we navigate our way through our lives, each of us contributing to this unique place called Nelson. As we depart, others take our place.
